Questions for Looking Closer

Keep curiosity; lose the shortcuts. These answers are starting points for a more informed visit.

Is every pavilion temporary?

No. A pavilion may be a temporary installation, a permanent exhibition building or a shelter. Duration must be checked for the individual project. See the permanent Nordic Pavilion in our landmark study.

Does public mean free and always open?

No. Ownership, admission charges, opening hours and permission to use particular spaces are separate questions. Check the operator’s current visitor information.

What makes this a northern architecture guide?

The guide focuses on Nordic places and designers, with selected comparisons elsewhere. The Nordic Pavilion in Venice is an example of Nordic architecture outside the region.

Is timber automatically the sustainable choice?

No. Sourcing, material quantities, structural efficiency, durability, replacement and end-of-life assumptions all affect the result. A comparative claim needs a defined assessment. Our evidence checklist explains what to look for.

Does a glass wall make a public building welcoming?

It can help people see inside, but a welcoming building also needs understandable entrances, comfortable conditions, accessible routes and clear operating policies.

What evidence supports an environmental claim?

Look for a stated scope, assessment method, comparison baseline and published assumptions. Distinguish measured energy use from predictions and design features from verified outcomes.

Can I assume a featured building is fully accessible?

No. These studies are not accessibility audits. Ask the operator about your particular route, mobility, sensory and assistance requirements before travelling.

Are opening hours and ticket prices listed here?

No. We link to operators because schedules, exhibitions, charges and temporary closures change.

May I photograph people in public buildings?

Follow the venue’s photography policy and applicable law. Ask permission where appropriate, avoid intrusive images and take particular care around children and memorial visitors.

How can I suggest a correction or building?

Use the Suggestions page to prepare a plain-text message, then copy or download it and send it to [email protected]. The tool does not send messages.
